The Lantern has reported that Rattan Lal, Distinguished University Professor of Soil Science, will be donating the money he received as a winner of the Japan Prize to Ohio State. Professor Lal's decision to give the $450,000 in award money to Ohio State stemmed from his lifelong commitment to ensure that his research and work benefits the subjects of his research; specifically, the subsistence farmers whose agircultural methods he has studied for the past several decades. As Professor Lal notes at the end of the interview with the Lantern, "I think it’s time that the scientific community and the policymakers of this award realize through researchers like me that [subsistence farmers] are being recognized...The money is really for research to support their work to help them move even more, and hopefully, other people will follow."

Professor Lal discusses the ethical motivations behind his research in CEHV's first ETHOS video, linked below.
