Building on our CARE Panels and traditional compliance-focused trainings, the CARE Training Program in the Responsible Conduct of Research provides faculty, postdocs, trainees, and anyone interested in research ethics with the opportunity to go into further depth on the ethical issues facing their everyday practice as researchers. This training program is also one of OSU’s approved courses for meeting the NIH’s in-person Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) requirements. Registration for the Autumn 2026 CARE Training Program is closed. Applications will reopen early Spring 2027.

Program Structure

The Care Training Program is structured around 8 discussion-based training sessions spread throughout the semester led and moderated by CARE Coordinator Prof. Dana Howard, an ethicist with expertise in research ethics and integrity. Each session will utilize a “flipped classroom model” where participants review relevant policies, a curated set of cutting-edge articles, and past CARE panels prior to each each session in order to facilitate face-to-face discussions which apply the concepts gleaned from the preparatory work to to real-life case studies which highlight the distinctive ethical challenges facing researchers. 

Distinctive Features

The CARE Training Program is multidisciplinary, foundational, exploratory, and ethicist-led:

• Multidisciplinary – convening researchers from across campus
• Foundational – focusing on core values and principles, not just procedural ethics
• Exploratory – inviting reflection and discussion on real-world cases
• Ethicist-led – each session moderated by PhD trained ethicists from CEHV

Autumn 2026 Schedule

CARE Training Program sessions will be held in a  hybrid format, with both Zoom and in-person options. The sessions will take place from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm on eight Mondays.

Session 5 [10/26/26]: Informed Consent and Participant Misconceptions

Session 6 [11/9/26]: Risk Benefit Analysis in Research

Session 7 [11/16/26]: Conflicts of Interest and Research Misconduct

Session 8 [11/30/26]: The Ethics of Cluster Randomization
