Why do we care about attribution and authorship? And what does it mean to attribute authorship of a text, or intellectual credit in general, to an individual after their death? This CARE (Conversations about Research Ethics) panel will discuss two recent projects which resurface the contributions of scholars who, until now, have received little or no credit: a recent edition of John Stuart Mill's famous On Liberty which lists his wife—Harriet Taylor Mill—as a co-author of the book for the first time, and the OSU Hidden Figures Revealed project, which is the first comprehensive historical study of Black mathematicians at a single institution. We will discuss these cases and more to inform our understanding of authorship and attribution in both historical and modern contexts.
