Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

What do Facebook, the Centers for Disease Control, the New York City Board of Education, and the National Security Agency have in common? For one thing, they all use computers to harness vast quantities of information aimed at improving the services they provide. They illustrate that what Daniel Bell called our “information society” is evolving to yet a new stage, the Era of Big Data. Large swaths of economic, social, political, and cultural activity are being driven by a flood of data unprecedented in its volume, complexity, and potential for human benefit.

“Big Data Future” will be a multidisciplinary conference on the possibilities for new enterprises grounded on “big data” to improve economic, social, and political life. It aims to both publicize the potential of “big data,” and to raise awareness of key legal and policy challenges. Panels will explore:

  • The Gathering and Analysis of Big Data
  • Data-Driven Understandings of Society
  • The Policy Infrastructure for Big Data: Privacy, Security, Investment
  • Governance of Big Data
  • The Economic Impacts of Big Data
  • Big Data and the Future of Cities
  • Big Data and the Social Good: Health, Education and Welfare
  • Big Data and Government Accountability
Papers presented at “Big Data Future” will be published by I/S in celebration of the journal’s tenth anniversary. Additional sponsors for the conference include the Center for Interdisciplinary Law and Policy Studies at the Moritz College of Law.

Its organizers hope Big Data Future will help to forge at Ohio State a strong interdisciplinary network of researchers working on data-driven projects or projects related to understanding the challenges of big data. Through both its formal programs and informal sessions, the conference should enable Ohio State researchers to become more aware of one another’s work and of the potential for collaboration.
