Danielle Allen, James Bryant Conant University Professor at Harvard University, and Director of Harvard’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, will deliver the CEHV Distinguished Lecture as part of this year’s COMPAS program on “What is America?”
COMPAS (Conversations on Morality, Politics, and Society) is a year-long, university-wide series of events promoting informed and civil discussion of controversial topics that require a variety of disciplinary perspectives to be addressed successfully. The 2019-2020 "What Is America?" COMPAS focuses on the question of what unites us as Americans, and how this shapes our thinking about the ethical and political challenges that we face.
Professor Allen is a classicist and political theorist who has published broadly in democratic theory, political sociology, and the history of political thought. Widely known for her work on justice and citizenship in both ancient Athens and modern America, Allen is the author of numerous books including, most recently, Our Declaration: A Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Defense of Equality (2014), Education and Equality (2016), and Cuz: The Life and Times of Michael A. (2017).
