Don Hubin was invited to participate in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation's Center for Library Initiatives annual conference. This year's conference, "At the Intersection: Libraries & the Digital Learning Ecosystem," focused on a number of issues, including the role of university libraries in the evolving field of learning analytics. Professor Hubin spoke to the CIC librarians on the ethics of learning analytics. Advanced data analytic tools on the large data sets that universities possess concerning student behavior and performance hold great promise for improving the learning environment for our students. However, serious ethical issues--issues concerning student privacy and autonomy--arise with respect to some possible uses of these data sources. Professor Hubin discussed these problems and how best to navigate our way through them to achieve the benefits that advanced learning analytics can provide.
