The COMPAS (Conversations on Morality, Politics, and Society) program in the OSU Center for Ethics and Human Values is sponsoring a photography contest to explore this year’s COMPAS theme Public/Private.
Photography can be a deeply intimate and private art form, documenting family life and other personal moments. But traditions of photojournalism and photography as public art also illustrate its powerful relevance for public matters as well. Indeed, the two can come together in challenging ways, for example, when personal grief in the face of tragedy ends up displayed on the front page of newspapers or TV screens. In addition to their general aesthetic merit, submissions will be judged on the ways in which the photographs illuminate the themes of personal privacy and publicity, public and private in the political and economic senses, as well as the ways in which such themes interact.
The contest is open to all Ohio State Undergraduate and Graduate Students, Alumni, and Faculty and Staff (Current and Retired), as well as the Columbus Community. Professional photographers will judge the submissions and cash prizes will be awarded in each submission category. Photo submissions, and other required documentation, are due by February 6, 2014.
