Abstract: The production, distribution, use and disposal of consumer goods create substantial environmental and social impacts, and many important supply chain participants have become interested in creating measurement and reporting systems to inform their decision making on such matters.  The Sustainability Consortium (TSC) was created to develop such a system, which is in the early stages of implementation with international retailers, including the world’s largest retailer.  TSC consists of over 100 corporate, NGO, government, and academic members, and has operations in the US, Europe and China, with plans to expand to other regions of the world in the coming years.  TSC’s focus is currently on creating knowledge products that are grounded in the best available science and that span a broad array of consumer goods sectors, multiple environmental and social dimensions, and multiple geographies.  To date, TSC has been the most successful large scale, broad scope consumer goods reporting initiative in the world, but its growth and development has been complex and not without controversy.  Jon Johnson, co-founder and chairman of the board of TSC, will present on TSC’s evolution, work, challenges, and future.

Professor Johnson's talk will be followed by refreshments.
