CEHV is pleased to host its first annual OSU Workshop on Democracy and Social Change. The series invites leading researchers to Ohio State to engage our community of philosophers and political theorists in exploring themes broadly related to civil discourse and pluralistic democratic society. If you are a researcher who would like to attend the workshop, please fill out the form below.
THEME
Our first workshop will delve into the intricacies of social change within democratic systems, emphasizing the complexity inherent in open societies. It will examine how the structures, norms, and practices that enable societal functioning and moral progress can also perpetuate unjust and problematic dynamics. The workshop aims to elucidate the challenges of instigating change in such systems and to investigate potential solutions, ranging from institutional design to grassroots social movements.
SPEAKERS
Invited speakers include: Sally Haslanger (MIT), Hélène Landemore (Yale), Renee Jorgensen (Michigan), Serene Khader (CUNY), Eduardo Martinez (Cincinnati), and Ryan Muldoon (Buffalo). The lead organizer for this event, Sahar Heydari Fard (Philosophy & CEHV Steering Committee), will also give a presentation.
Ohio State commentators include: Dana Howard (Bioethics/COM, Philosophy/ASC), Kathryn Joyce (CEHV), Benjamin McKean (Political Science/ASC), Michael Neblo (Political Science/ASC), Naomi Scheinerman (Bioethics/COM), Winston Thompson (Educational Studies/EHE), and Piers Turner (Philosophy/ASC).
