CEHV's Aaron Yarmel Publishes Editorial: "Jewish, Palestinian students are terrified. Why colleges must try what Ohio State is doing."
CEHV's Aaron Yarmel published a guest column in the Columbus Dispatch about university efforts to engage with students about what is going on in Israel and Palestine. While educating students about the history of the region and responding empathetically to their suffering are essential components of a healthy response, they are insufficient. In addition to these, Civil discourse is needed. Yarmel's piece highlights the important work being carried out by CEHV and OSU more broadly.
From the article:
Civil discourse is not a panacea for society’s problems, and it cannot replace information-sharing, purely therapeutic forms of empathetic listening, and disruptive activism for social change.
But I would like to invite you to join me in imagining, for a moment, what campus communities would look like if sufficient resources were allocated towards a regular commitment to fostering civil discourse.
What skills would our college students then carry with them after graduation?
