Check Out CEHV's CARE Program for Monthly Virtual Panels and a Free RCR Training Program

One of CEHV’s main programs—CARE, or “Conversations About Research Ethics”— offers Ohio State researchers a distinctive opportunity to deepen their engagement with research ethics, and to explore emerging challenges in our evolving research practices, together with trained PhD ethicists.

Led by Professor Dana Howard (Division of Bioethics, COM/Philosophy, ASC), CARE encourages multidisciplinary and foundational dialogue that brings together natural and social scientists with researchers from humanistic disciplines.

CARE includes two main offerings:

  1. RCR Training Program. Each semester, CARE offers a training program in the responsible conduct of research, which has recently been approved by OSU to meet the NIH's in-person Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) requirements. If you are interested in enrolling in this program, please contact CARE Graduate Research Associate Layne Garrelts at garrelts.6@buckeyemail.osu.edu.

  1. Monthly Virtual Panels. Additionally, CARE hosts monthly virtual panels on thought-provoking and innovative topics in research ethics. These panels feature both external experts and Ohio State researchers with relevant experience.

In September, CARE hosted a panel on the ethics of xenotransplantation research, exploring research on the use of non-human cells, tissues, or organs for human medical treatment. The panel, available on our website, covered questions including: Are there distinctive ethical issues that arise with xenotransplantation that change the informed consent process to research?  Does public perception of this sort of intervention change how we should understand the legitimacy of its practical applications.

Looking ahead, October's panel will focus on the ethical implications of big data in research, while December's event will feature a discussion on conducting research in the context of war.

Our team also welcomes opportunities to partner with faculty, postdocs, or graduate students pursuing projects related to research ethics. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.
