Four CEHV Steering Committee members speak at International PPE Society Conference
CEHV Steering Committee members – Sahar Heydari Fard, Eric MacGilvray, Emma Saunders-Hastings, and Piers Norris Turner – all gave presentations at the annual Philosophy, Politics, and Society (PPE) conference from Nov 4-6, 2022. It is the leading international conference in the field.
Professors MacGilvray and Saunders-Hastings each were put under the spotlight in “Author Meets Critics” panels about their new books:
- MacGilvray is the author of Liberal Freedom : Pluralism, Polarization, and Politics (Cambridge University Press), which argues that the liberal tradition should be understood as the ongoing effort to balance two different conceptions of freedom, republican freedom and market freedom.
- Saunders-Hastings is the author of Private Virtues, Public Vices: Philanthropy and Democratic Equality (University of Chicago Press), which addresses the ways philanthropy can pose a challenge to democracy and relational equality.
Professor Heydari Fard was a featured speaker on two panels: “Feminist Philosophy in PPE” and “Social Structure in Social Science.”
Professor Turner spoke about the relationship between liberalism and socialism in a panel on the normative political economy of John Stuart Mill.
CEHV provides the core faculty leadership for PPE, one of Ohio State’s newest undergraduate programs. A collaboration of the Departments of Philosophy, Political Science, and Economics, PPE introduces students to a wide range of perspectives and provides them skills to successfully navigate public life in law, business, non-profits, public policy, and other fields. Begun in 2019, it already has nearly 200 majors.
